Shop safely during the Covid-19 pandemic
A large part of people’s daily routines has come to a halt due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Lockdown restrictions and stay-at-home orders keep activities at a bare minimum, including essentials such as food shopping.
Some of the most significant public concerns brought by the pandemic relate to supermarkets. People are worried about the supply of essential groceries and household items and how they can shop safely when visiting supermarkets and other retail outlets.
Although many families have been ordering groceries online and having their purchases delivered, venturing out is still a necessity for some people. If you can’t avoid going out, here’s everything you need to know to shop safely amid the pandemic.
Before Heading Out
Don’t take the entire family. Go alone if you’re not buying many things. Otherwise, ask just one person to help you carry your shopping. This helps prevent overcrowding the supermarket and limits your family’s exposure to the virus. Also, avoid going at peak hours so you won’t come in to contact with large crowds.
Face masks are now mandatory. Be sure to wear yours at all times when you’re outside. It’s also good practice to wear disposable gloves since you’ll be touching plenty of items in the supermarket. Bring your disinfectant wipes and hand sanitiser.
At the Supermarket
Once you get to the shop, you’ll have to wait in line because stores limit the number of people inside. Follow the floor markings to stay within a safe distance from other shoppers.
Sanitise your hands often. Make sure your hands are clean before entering the store and after leaving. Disinfect everything before touching them. This includes door handles, basket handles and carts, among others. Always maintain a 2-metre distance from other people.
Touch only what you’ll buy. It helps to bring a grocery list so you won’t have to spend time perusing items and wandering around aisles. Avoid touching your face throughout your shopping trip. Wearing a face shield helps you do this, although it’s not mandatory.
When You Get Home
Discard your gloves before getting into your car. Please put them in a plastic bag to avoid contaminating other surfaces then ditch them into a rubbish bin.
Once you get home, wash your hands immediately. Don’t leave your perishables outside. Some people do this because they’re scared of bringing whatever virus or contamination the items have into their home. However, meat and fresh produce need to be stored at the correct temperature to prevent the growth of bacteria.
The best way to disinfect your groceries is to rinse fruits, vegetables and meat under cold, running water before storing them in the fridge. Don’t use any soap or chemical disinfectant on produce and meat.
For non-perishables, you can wipe down each item with a disinfectant wipe. You can do this as an extra precaution, although the possibility of virus transmission by touching food packaging is very low.
Finally, if you used reusable bags, wash them after your shopping trip. Be sure to clean the inside and outside of the bags.
These precautions are a necessity in what the world calls “the new normal”. These safety measures not only shield your family from the virus, but they also help you do your part in protecting other people.
Stay at home as much as possible. If you have the option to not go out for food shopping, buy your groceries online instead and have them delivered to your doorstep.
